Self-care – Take care of yourself

Self-care is not about egoistic self-optimization; it’s a way of relating to oneself, an invitation to get to know yourself better, to develop self-awareness. Only by doing so can we find our balance, discover our center. But also recognize when we’re out of balance and need to make adjustments.

Self-care is not just a human concern; it‘ s also a natural behavior exhibited by many animal species. For instance, cats are notorious for their fastidious grooming habits and love of lounging in the sun – behaviors that promote relaxation and rejuvenation.

The self is not an island

The key insight is that the self is not isolated from external influences. We are shaped by our environment just as much as we shape it ourselves. This dynamic interplay between the inner and outer worlds creates a constant exchange.

In times of stress, for example, we may find ourselves out of balance. By becoming aware of these changes, we can analyze them and develop strategies to get back on track. It’s about understanding oneself, being mindful, and acknowledging one’s own presence.

Self-care – a modern hype?

Self-care is indeed a timeless topic that has been discussed and explored throughout history, including in ancient philosophical texts.

In fact, the concept of self-care can be traced back to ancient Greek philosophers like Plato and Aristotle. For example, Aristotle’s notion of „eudaimonia“ (flourishing or living well) emphasizes the importance of cultivating one’s own character and virtues as a means of achieving happiness and fulfillment.

Similarly, in his work „The Republic,“ Plato discusses the concept of „philautia“, which can be translated to self-love or self-care. He argues that true wisdom and virtue require a deep understanding of oneself and one’s place in the world.
